It is a powerful tool to gain knowledge, values, and virtues that help shape your personal growth and the future of society and the world. While schooling starts at home, it continues through our life, as the learning process is infinite and boundless. Education has evolved over the years, and so have the methods of learning, from offline to digital. So to celebrate the power of education, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution with consensus and observed January 24th, as International Education Day, for the first time, in the year 2019.

World education day reaffirms the role of education, which is to build a community, empower people, foster peace and raise awareness about fundamental rights. So let’s understand the history, and importance of education day, along with the theme of International Education Day 2023.

World International Education Day: History

Before we dive deeper, let us understand the brief history of World Education Day.

Education plays a critical role in breaking boundaries between cultures, and countries, fostering peace, and maintaining equality across communities around the world.

So to mark the importance of education and the role of this powerful tool in global peace and development, in 2018 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 24th January as International Education Day.

59 member states authored the above resolution to mark the beginning of the International Education Day celebration. On large scale, World Education Day is celebrated to support transformative actions for inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all.

Importance of Education Day

International Education Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the lack of access to proper education in many parts of the globe. There are some nations where no formal schooling or learning resources exist. Education is a global fundamental right of every human being. And we should everything possible in our stride to guarantee that everyone has equal access to education. So let us learn the importance behind the World Education Day celebration -

• Education is a human right -
  The Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly establishes an equal right to education for all human beings. The declaration further calls for free and compulsory elementary education for all. And International Education Day helps to realign our focus on education as a fundamental human right for all.


• Education is key to sustainable development
  Education is the way to promote sustainable development. It is rather an essential tool to help societies develop, and evolve. And hence World Education Day helps to recognize the importance of education as the key to persistent sustainable development.


• Challenges in obtaining universal education for all
  Education offers a promising future to one and all, by providing lifelong opportunities. However, in many parts of the world, the right to education is being violated, which is completely unacceptable. So to raise awareness, and to put an end to all the challenges in obtaining education for all, International Education Day is celebrated.

The theme of International Education Day 2023

World Education Day every year since 2019 is celebrated globally on various themes such as learning for people, the planet, prosperity & peace, and many more. As far as the theme of International Education Day 2023 is concerned, it is based on the motto “Changing Course, Transforming Education”.

The theme for World International Education Day focuses on the revival of education and the recovery of education to its usual form. The purpose is to strengthen and welcome the revival of education. To sum up, this year’s World Education Day is celebrated to prioritize education in order to accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals against the backdrop of global recession, growing inequalities, and climate crisis.
